Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Combat Ju-Jutsu and our classes.

Are the classes open to beginners?

Yes. All classes are open to complete beginners. No prior martial arts experience or specific fitness level is required. Training is structured so new students can learn safely alongside more experienced members.

What do I need for my first class?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water. Training is usually done barefoot. Training or wrestling shoes may be worn, but outdoor shoes are not permitted on the mats.

What is the format of a class?

Classes typically begin with a warm-up and light conditioning, followed by technical instruction and structured drills. Students work in pairs or small groups, practising techniques from the core Combat Ju-Jutsu syllabus in a controlled and progressive way.

Do you have a grading system?

Yes. Combat Ju-Jutsu uses a structured grading system that allows students to track their progress through the syllabus over time. Gradings are based on understanding, application, and consistent training.

What does membership include?

Membership allows you to attend one or two weekly classes, depending on your chosen package. All members also have access to open mat sessions at Impact Gym for additional practice.

Is Combat Ju-Jutsu safe?

Yes. Safety is a priority. Training is controlled, progressive, and supervised. Techniques are pressure-tested, but always adapted to the experience and ability of the individual.

Do I have to take part in sparring?

Sparring is introduced gradually and in a controlled way. Students are encouraged to participate when ready, but no one is forced to spar before they feel comfortable.

How intense are the classes?

Intensity is progressive. Beginners start at a manageable pace, with pressure and complexity increasing as skills develop. You are never expected to train beyond your limits.

What Our Students Say

"Having coming back to martial arts after a several years break of proper training, I have tried finding a system I could invest in with excellent instructors. I found that here Jay and Ross are both brilliant teachers. Able to explain complex concepts simply and cater to individual needs. You can really see their passion for martial arts and teaching. The system itself has a focus on practical application, giving you options from low level of force to techniques and principles for use in higher stress situations. It also is great fun to practice. You can guarantee you learn something new every session even on techniques you may have learnt previously. Having recently graded here. I felt I earned my first belt here with much higher effort needed, than higher level belts in other systems. Which not only filled me with a sense of achievement but also showed me how much ive learnt. I can't recommend here highly enough and hope to see whoever reads this on the mats soon."
