The Art of Self-Defence

What is Combat Jujutsu

A traditional martial art adapted for modern self-defence

What Is Combat Ju-Jutsu?

Combat Ju-Jutsu is a practical self-defence system built around realism, pressure testing, and control. It draws on the principles of traditional Japanese Ju-Jutsu while adapting them to the realities of modern violence — unpredictable situations, uneven environments, and untrained but aggressive attackers.

The focus is not on competition, performance, or points, but on learning how to recognise danger, manage confrontation, and protect yourself effectively.

What Combat Ju-Jutsu Means to Me

Ju-Jutsu originated as a battlefield art, developed for situations where warriors found themselves disarmed and forced to fight empty-handed or with improvised weapons. Over centuries, these techniques were refined and passed down — not as sport, but as a means of survival.

Combat Ju-Jutsu continues that tradition. It's not about trophies or performance — it's about learning how to protect yourself and the people around you, with a clear head and the right skills.

Combat Ju-Jutsu vs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Combat Ju-Jutsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu share common historical roots, but over time they have evolved with different goals and training priorities.

Combat Ju-Jutsu

  • Focus: Real-world self-defence
  • Positioning: Emphasis on staying mobile and upright
  • Striking: Integrated with grappling and throws
  • Weapons: Defence against knives, bottles, and bats
  • Scenarios: Multiple attackers and unpredictable situations
  • Mindset: Awareness, control, and safe disengagement

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

  • Focus: Sport competition and ground fighting
  • Positioning: Primary emphasis on ground techniques
  • Striking: Generally not included
  • Weapons: Not typically covered
  • Scenarios: One-on-one encounters
  • Mindset: Submissions, positional dominance, and point scoring

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an outstanding sport and an excellent way to develop grappling skill, fitness, and discipline. Combat Ju-Jutsu, by contrast, is designed specifically for self-defence in uncontrolled environments — where strikes, weapons, multiple threats, and uneven conditions may be present.

Neither approach is "better" in general terms. They are simply built for different purposes.

If your goal is practical self-defence for real-world situations, Combat Ju-Jutsu is structured around that reality from the ground up.

"If you want a practical way to defend yourself in any circumstance, this is the place. Combat Jujutsu concentrates on real life situations..."

The History of Jujutsu

by Kevin O'Hagan

Jujutsu (also known as Jiu-Jitsu or Ju-Jitsu) is one of the oldest martial arts, with roots stretching back centuries in feudal Japan. The art was developed by the Samurai as a method of combat when weapons were lost or ineffective.

Traditional Jujutsu encompasses a wide range of techniques including throws, joint locks, chokes, strikes, and weapons defence. These techniques were battle-tested and refined over generations of actual warfare.

Our system has been developed over 30+ years of training and teaching, incorporating insights from real-world self-defence situations and continuous refinement of technique. It represents the evolution of an ancient art for modern threats.
