The Art of Self-Defence

What is Combat Jujutsu

A modernised battlefield martial art adapted for real-world self-defence

What Combat Ju-Jutsu Means to Me

Combative Jujutsu, also known as Jujitsu or Jiu-jitsu, is a battlefield art originating from the Samurai of Japan. Samurai warriors were usually on horseback and well armed. The martial art of Jujitsu (Jiu-Jitsu) was created as a fighting option if the Samurai found themselves disarmed and on foot.

The term "Jujutsu" translates roughly to "gentle art" or "flexible technique," but don't let that fool you. It refers to the principle of using an opponent's force against them rather than opposing it directly—a highly effective approach in real combat situations.

Combat Jujutsu takes these time-tested principles developed over centuries of actual combat and adapts them for modern self-defence scenarios. We focus on practical application, situational awareness, and techniques that work regardless of size or strength differences.

Combat Jujutsu vs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

While both arts share common roots, they've evolved with very different purposes. Here's how they compare:

Combat Jujutsu

  • Focus: Real-world self-defence and street scenarios
  • Standing: Emphasis on staying on your feet
  • Striking: Includes punches, kicks, and pre-emptive strikes
  • Weapons: Defence against knives, bottles, bats
  • Multiple attackers: Trained to handle multiple threats
  • Mindset: Awareness, de-escalation, and escape

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

  • Focus: Sport competition and ground fighting
  • Ground: Primary focus on ground techniques
  • Striking: Generally not included in training
  • Weapons: Not typically covered
  • One-on-one: Designed for single opponent scenarios
  • Mindset: Submission and point scoring

Both arts are excellent—BJJ is fantastic for sport and fitness. But if your goal is practical self-defence for real-world situations, Combat Jujutsu is specifically designed for that purpose.

"If you want a practical way to defend yourself in any circumstance, this is the place. Combat Jujutsu concentrates on real life situations..."

The History of Jujutsu

by Kevin O'Hagan

Jujutsu (also known as Jiu-Jitsu or Ju-Jitsu) is one of the oldest martial arts, with roots stretching back centuries in feudal Japan. The art was developed by the Samurai as a method of combat when weapons were lost or ineffective.

Traditional Jujutsu encompasses a wide range of techniques including throws, joint locks, chokes, strikes, and weapons defence. These techniques were battle-tested and refined over generations of actual warfare.

Our system has been developed over 30+ years of training and teaching, incorporating insights from real-world self-defence situations and continuous refinement of technique. It represents the evolution of an ancient art for modern threats.
